PPK vs RTK: the practical choice for drone mapping
RTK applies corrections during flight
A live correction link can produce accurate positions immediately and is valuable for navigation, stakeout and fast field feedback. The limitation is dependence on that link and its operating range.
PPK applies corrections after flight
The aircraft records observations and the correction data is applied later. Processing adds a step, but it allows the operator to inspect and optimize the solution after capture.
The honest answer
Use RTK when real-time positions are essential. Use PPK when mapping deliverables benefit from post-flight control and review. Many enterprise mapping teams use both.
Lost RTK during the mission?
If the aircraft recorded the necessary raw observations, the flight may still be recoverable through PPK. Preserve the complete mission folder and test it before scheduling a re-flight.
